Mintaro was established in the 1850’s when homes and public buildings were constructed to provide services to the teams transporting copper from Burra to Port Wakefield. The towns historical significance was recognised in 1984 when it received
a State Heritage listing. Many of the individual buildings which you can visit and where you can stay are listed
on the
State Heritage Register.

Mintaro is the home of the famous Mintaro slate quarry which has been in operation since 1859 producing high quality slate
which is used on billiard tables around the world.


Mintaro is a pleasant 90 minute drive north of Adelaide. Today Mintaro offers a warm welcome to visitors……

  • to walk around Mintaro and enjoy the well preserved buildings from the last two centuries, the beautiful gardens, the streetscape with lovely hedgerows and to observe the way slate is used throughout the town.
  • providing an ideal base to explore some of the 30 wineries of the Clare Valley and to walk or cycle the 26 km Riesling Trail
  • to visit wineries, to meet the maker, taste and purchase the fine wines - see map

  • Visit  The Tin Shed Gallery, open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10.00am to 4.00pm with a wonderful array of art, craft and collectibles. Copper Ore Road, Mintaro.
  • Browse in the antique shop located on Copper Ore Rd Mintaro and discuss the history of your purchase with Luis.
  • Visit Mintaro Maze, a living maze and the gift shop. Jacka Rd, Mintaro. Ph 08 88439012            
  • Cycle around the town or ride The Riesling Trail between Auburn and Clare (26km). (Cycle hire at Clare Valley Cycle Hire ph 08 88422782 or Sevenhill Cellars   ph 08 88434222).
  • Follow the historic walking trail around around the Mintaro township - brochures available from The Clare Valley Information Centre. Ph 1800 242 131
  •  Arrange a game of tennis on the Mintaro tennis courts   (please enquire about court bookings when making your accommodation reservation, the Clare Council ph 08 88422700 or consult the notice board outside the Mintaro Post Office) or a round of golf at the nearby Clare golf course (ph 08 88421022), a game of bowls at the Mintaro Bowling Club (please enquire when making your accommodation reservation)
  • Relax in Torr Park an attractive picnic area and playground in the main street of Mintaro, adjoining the tennis courts and bowling green
